The staff at OMS are so excited to welcome OMS students back to school for the 26-27 school year on Monday, August 31!

Want to know the appropriate dress policy for OMS or what the homework policy is when your student is absent? What about different ways you can stay informed? Most important, what are the rules, policies, and procedures OMS follows? You can find answers to these questions and much, much more in this linked OMS Student/Parent Handbook. This should be your go to resource when you have a question about anything OMS related. PLEASE READ THE HANDBOOK WITH YOUR CHILD(REN). At OMS, our vision is learning together in a respectful, positive, student-focused learning environment where essential standards are achieved by all students. In line with this vision, our way of reporting progress is through a 4-point scale on a variety of essential standard categories in each class. Behavior will be reported out separately through a Citizenship score. Our goal is to be able to communicate through the report card individual student strengths and opportunities for growth.

Reporting categories are as follows:

4.0 = Advanced: Superior mastery of grade level standard

3.5 = High Proficient: Progressing toward advanced mastery of grade level standard

3.0 = Proficient: Meets grade level standard

2.5 = Low Proficient: Inconsistent understanding of grade level standard

2.0 = Basic = Limited understanding of grade level standard

1.5 = Beginning: Little to no understanding of grade level standard

1.0 = No Evidence/Insufficient evidence to determine understanding of grade level standard

What does a 1.0 or 1.5 really mean? In standards-based grading, a 1.0 is not the same as a D or F; it’s more serious. It means we don’t yet have enough evidence that your child understands the skill, or your child is showing very limited progress toward mastering it. These scores signal the greatest need for support and are equivalent to failing or

incomplete grades in a traditional system.

If this was a traditional letter grade, it would be equivalent to an F (failing), because the core skill is not yet learned. But in standards based grading, it’s not about failure. It’s about growth. Our goal is to help every student move from a 1.0 to a 2.0, and beyond.

NeeDohs, Squishies, or anything similar by a different name should stay at home. These fidget toys became a big distraction in our classrooms and hallways last school year. If your child needs to use a fidget of some sort to regulate, please talk to their Mrs. Lauritsen or Mrs. Stengel to come up with a plan that meets the needs of your child, but doesn't become a distraction to learning in the classroom Thank you for your support with this new expectation.

In an effort to keep students safe and buses moving, please remember that if you are dropping off your child or other students in the morning, or picking them up in the afternoon, please drop them off/pick-up on the side of the road. Cars should not be pulling in the circle drive between 7 and 7:20 am or between 2:30 and 2:45 pm. This is for buses only. Likewise, please remind students to use the sidewalks and crosswalks. It is extremely busy in the front of the building before and after school so we want to do everything possible to keep everyone safe. All students will enter the building through the main entrance, door 19.

Mr. Ring had his GoldenDoodle, Nash, and Mrs. Hinze had her King Charles Spaniel, Frankie, trained as therapy dogs. Like the past, Nash will be visiting our school with Mr. Ring throughout the year. This year, Frankie will be in the building some days with Mrs. Hinze. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the many benefits that a therapy dog can bring, including stress relief, increased happiness, and improved social interactions. Here’s a slideshow that will be shared with students to learn more about Nash and Frankie.

However, we understand that some children may have health or other related concerns regarding the presence of a dog on campus. If your child has any allergies, phobias, or other conditions that we should be aware of, please let us know as soon as possible. We will make every effort to ensure that all students feel safe and comfortable during Nash and/or Frankie's visits. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, the Oostburg School District is introducing a five-year Chromebook lifecycle program to provide students with consistent technology while encouraging responsible device care.

Students will receive a new Chromebook in 3rd grade to use through 7th grade and another new Chromebook in 8th grade to use through 12th grade. Each device will remain assigned to the same student throughout its five-year cycle.

Families may purchase optional Chromebook Coverage for $15 per year which was an option during the registration process.. Coverage helps with costs associated with accidental damage and normal wear and tear. Intentional damage, neglect, or misuse is not covered.

Students who purchase Chromebook Coverage every year of the five-year cycle will receive ownership of the Chromebook at the end of that cycle. Students maintaining coverage from grades 3–7 may keep their Chromebook after 7th grade, while students maintaining coverage from grades 8–12 may keep theirs after graduation. If coverage is missed during any year, the device remains district property.

The program is designed to promote student responsibility, reduce technology waste, provide a consistent device experience, and create a more predictable replacement and budgeting cycle for the district.

Registration fees for the upcoming school year have been accessible on your Parent Portal since July 1 and are due by October 31. You can conveniently make payments through the parent portal under the "Fees" tab. Alternatively, you may send a check or money order for the correct amount, payable to Oostburg School District. Please remember to issue separate checks for registration and lunch fees.

School lunch prices to for the 26-27 school year are $3.45 for OES students, $3.65 for OMS students and $3.85 for OHS students. If your child wants to purchase a milk for with their cold lunch, it's $0.50/carton. A deposit envelope can be found at the school office or a deposit can be made through your Parent Portal under the Food Service tab. Free & Reduced Price School Meal Program applications can be filled out anytime during the school year in any school office or online via Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

It is our goal to increase student attendance and we would kindly ask that you help us out by scheduling your vacations and appointments around the school calendar. We understand the value of family vacations and the importance of spending time together, but when students are absent from school for multiple days in a row, it is challenging for our teachers to plan lessons and also difficult for our students to make up work and reach their learning goals. Hopefully by giving you our calendar in advance, you will be able to schedule your vacations and appointments to coincide with our days off of school when possible.
