Attendance
Attendance at Oostburg School District
Why Attendance Matters
Academic Achievement
Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academic success, graduate on time, and pursue higher education opportunities.
Social and Emotional Development
School provides a supportive environment where students can develop social skills, build friendships, and enhance their emotional well-being.
Future Success
Regular attendance instills valuable habits such as punctuality, responsibility, and commitment, which are essential for success in life.
Attendance Expectations
Wisconsin law requires students between the ages of 6 and 18, including students enrolled in five-year-old kindergarten, to attend school regularly throughout the school year. The Oostburg School District expects students to attend school daily, arrive on time, and remain for the full instructional day whenever possible.

An absence is considered unexcused when the school has not received an acceptable reason or when it does not meet the criteria for an excused absence.
Students who accumulate unexcused absences may be considered truant or habitually truant under Wisconsin law. When attendance concerns arise, our priority is to partner with families to identify barriers, provide support, and help students return to regular attendance.
-
Students may be excused for reasons permitted by Wisconsin law and Board Policy, including:
- Illness or medical appointments
- Mental health needs
- Religious observances or instruction
- Family emergencies
- Funerals
- Court appearances
- College visits
- Pre-approved family absences (up to ten days per school year)
- Other approved circumstances
Students are responsible for completing missed assignments and assessments.
We believe that strong partnerships between families and schools are essential for ensuring student success. By working together, we can create a culture of attendance where every student feels motivated and supported to attend school every day.
