Music
The Oostburg Music Department aims to give students an understanding and love of music that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Opportunities to take part in group music experiences and classes at OMS include:
- 6th Grade Band
- 7th & 8th Grade Band
- Jazz Band
- Middle School Choirs
- Music Exploration – High Interest class
Students are invited to take part in the annual Solo & Ensemble Festival in both large and small ensembles.
Extracurricular Activities and Athletics
Youth Center
The Youth Center is a hub of activity from 2:30-3:45pm on Mondays through Thursdays. Here students can relax, study, chat, or play games. Popular activities include checkers, chess, foosball, air hockey, computers, Playstation, and watching TV. The Youth Center provides students an option to hang out with friends after school in a controlled and supervised environment. A wide variety of snacks are available for purchase, and late bus passes are available upon request. The Youth Center is also available during middle school basketball games and dances. Underwater Robotics (ROV)
ROV is a robotics club with a mission of building skills in business, engineering, problem solving, teamwork. Students organize themselves into a business and design, engineer, build and compete with their underwater robot. Additionally, students write a technical report, give an oral presentation to a panel of judges and publish a poster display. This club meets from November – April, and try-outs take place in Fall. Oostburg NASP Archery
The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is an international non-profit educational foundation established to teach archery as part of the in-school curriculum in grades 4-12. NASP is highly standardized to be safe, durable, economical and most importantly, universal fit for almost every student. This club is offered January to April, with potential competitions extending in to May and June. Please contact Oostburg Archery for more information. View Video clip
OMS Student Council
Middle School Student Council is a way for students to become involved in making their school a better place. Student Council members are expected to be role models for other students, responsible for reaching out to community members, and maintaining grades / homework. Starting in the 2015-16 school year, there will be Student Council Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary) and grade-level representatives. Applications are submitted at the beginning of the year and Student Council members are informed by mid-October. Please contact Ms. Kimble for more information.
Geography Bee
National Geographic Geography Bee is held annually at OMS. Seven rounds of competition to decide 9 finalists that leads to 1 final Geography Bee Champ. This event takes place in the Spring semester. All OMS students are eligible. Please see Mr. Kloepping for more information.
Forensics
Forensics provides a fun, unique, and valuable opportunity to practice speaking in front of other people while maintaining your composure. That is a skill you will need no matter what you do in life. Plan to meet weekly after school to practice with your coach. Speaking categories to choose from include: Demonstration, Persuasive. Extemporaneous, Informative Speech, Poetry, Prose, News Reporting, Play Acting, Reader’s Theatre, Storytelling, and more! Please see Ms. Szyman for more details!
Destination Imagination
DI is a program at the elementary, middle, and high school level that develops creative problem solving and teamwork skills. Teams of less than seven students work with an adult team manager to solve challenges short term and long term challenges throughout the school year. Teams compete to showcase their work at a regional tournament in March. Teams form in late September, and the season generally ends in late April. Mr. Bretall is the Destination Imagination Coordinator for our district. Interest forms are sent to students in September. OMS Jazz Band
Students will explore the many styles of jazz music and its history through an ensemble method book and literature. They also learn the basics of jazz improvisation. One or two evening concert performances will be required. While the course is open to all instruments in the band, a minimum of two saxophones, two trumpets, two trombones, one percussionist and one pianist will be required to form the basis of the group. This group is offered to students in grade 7 & 8 who are currently enrolled in concert band. The group meets after school from 2:35-3:10 one day/week.
