Good morning, Parents.
Congratulations to all of the students involved in the musical. It was wonderful, and my only regret is that I saw it only once, which meant I did not get to see all of the students in their largest roles. Also, best wishes to all of the students involved in Forensics tonight in Manitowoc. I hope you can qualify for the State meet because it is a great experience. And good luck to our music students involved in solo and ensemble on Saturday here in Oostburg. Congratulations to all of you for showing the courage to become involved in these activities, and to push yourselves out of your comfort zones, because these situations really help you grow.
Each year as part of the Top Ten Banquet, we ask the seniors to share the most important lesson they learned in high school as part of a booklet that provides information about their accomplishments and career plans. Two seniors offered the following advice or encouragement to younger students that I hope parents will share with your children.
“The most important lesson I have learned was to try new things early on in high school. For example, I did the play in the fall and spring of my senior year, but I wish I would have tried it sooner. I also joined ROV and wish I would have done it last year.”
“Be willing to try new things. Like many people, I’ve always liked to stick with what I know and feel comfortable with. However, somehow after much convincing from my peers, I decided to try out for Voice at the end of my sophomore year. As it turned out, Voice is a lot of fun. It has taught me quite a few life skills, and it has helped me become more comfortable talking and speaking in front of large groups of people. I only wish I would have tired out sooner. With that thought in mind, I’ve since tried to take advantage of every opportunity that I have been given, and I plan to leave high school with no regrets.”
Looking even further ahead, good luck to our ROV team, our Project Grill team, and DI teams. I am thankful for all of the coaches of these activities because these diverse sorts of experiences help OHS students learn and grow in really valuable ways. Thanks to Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Jochman, Mrs. Howell, Mr. Galezio, Mrs. Szyman, Mrs. Leidall, Mr. Hendrikse, Mr. Beonisch, Mr. Poppe, Mr. Bretall and the DI coaches. Programs are only as good as the people who guide them, and that fact that these are tremendous experiences for kids speaks to the quality and dedication of these coaches and advisers. We are very fortunate that they are willing to commit extra time and effort beyond their full time jobs to provide these valuable and enjoyable programs.
Have a great week,
Scott
