As I was greeting our elementary students who were getting off the bus and walking toward the playground for the first time this school year, a 5K student put up his hand to give me a “fist bump” and said, “I am a little nervous but a little excited too!” I could not have said it better myself! In fact, as we bumped fists, I replied,“That’s ok, I am a little nervous and excited too.” That may have caught him off guard, but he seemed to appreciate the fact that he was not in this alone.
After 24+ years in education I am not afraid to admit that I never sleep well the night before students return to school. I hope that the “little bit of nervous” and “a lot of excitement” are always a part of the emotions I experience when getting ready for that first day of the school year. The best stuff in life – the most important stuff – often includes these emotions, and the responsibility we share in educating the children of our community is definitely “most important stuff!”
Throughout the summer a common inquiry always seem to question if I am looking forward to school starting. Since my administrative role has me in the office even when students are on vacation, my response is always the same as I share that what we do is “just work” without our students. When kids fill our buildings it is certainly not “just work,” but instead it becomes who we are. Our buildings come alive with energy and excitement that is contagious.
We hope you and your family have a very positive experience this school year. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to partner with you!
