Students in grade 3-8 were “test pilots” for a new virtual reality app in development by Google. These “Expeditions” are collections, scenes, or VR panoramas — 360° photo spheres, 3D images, and video — annotated with details, highlights, and questions that make them easy to integrate into curriculum. A Google representative provided us with smartphones and Google Cardboard devices to use to access the experiences. Teachers led their classes to the Congo, the moon, the Great Barrier Reef, various college campuses, National Parks, South America, and other far-flung places. The collective decibel level of all the “whoa”s heard at any given moment surely broke the sound barrier! OES and OMS were buzzing with excitement all day. We are so thrilled to have been selected to take part in this high-tech, futuristic experience.
