The Spring ACT test will be given on April 12th. While most of our juniors take the test, we are also really encouraging sophomores to take the spring test as well. We offer this encouragement to sophomores because it is very common to see students improve their test scores a point or more just because of the experience of taking the test a second or third time. We would like sophomores to consider taking the test for the first time early in their career because they gain important experience in doing so, and we think it will pay off in improved performance as they take the test additional times as juniors.
We are also planning to use intervention time to provide sessions that will better prepare students for success on the April 12th test. While the content related to the College and Career Readiness Standards—the content on which the ACT is built—is taught and reviewed regularly in our classes, these review sessions are more focused on specific test taking skills and review of the most commonly tested material. We do not regularly cover test taking skills related to the ACT in our classes, so this sort of preparation is only available through these review sessions.
ACT Prep Sessions:
Science: Thursdays 11-11:30, beginning February 20th, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3 and 4/10 in Mr. Hendrikse’ room.
English/Reading: Tuesdays 11-11:30, beginning March 4th, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1 and 4/8 in Ms. Szyman’s room.
Math: Mondays 11-11:30, beginning February 24th, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/7 in Mrs. Pribek’s room.
Please discuss the April 12th ACT test with your sophomore or junior students, and also please talk with them about these opportunities to prepare in a focused manner.

Study Session 1 – Feb 20
Registration for the ACT test
· Expect to take 45 minutes to register
· April 12th is the Important Spring test – Register prior to March 7th
· Cost: $36.50 (No Writing), $52.50 with writing
· Testing Centers – Sheboygan North, UW-Sheboygan, Port Washington High School
· Arrive early with pencils, photo ID erasers, watch with timer, small snack (no eating in the testing room), simple calculator.
· The ACT test normally run from 8:00 am – 12:15pm without writing. The writing section takes an additional 45 minutes. There is a short 15 minute break between the Math and Reading test. There is also a break after the science test (if taking the writing)
· Testing order: English, Math, Break, Reading, Science
General Test Taking Strategies for Science – Don’t lose Focus!
· Think of the science passages as puzzles or riddles
· We would like all students to have a science score at or above 24 (75% correct)
· Scores at or above a 30 in science or students showing 5 points improvement from one ACT test to another in science will be posted on the “ACT Science Wall of Fame Board.”
· The science test is the last test of the day and although you may seem tired, you need to dig in deep and find the passion within. Of all 4 tests, this one is very important.
· Use all of your time. If you finish early, go back and double check as many answers as possible.
· Do not leave any questions unanswered (start guessing with 2 minutes left)
· Save the hardest questions until last and go back to them at the end.
· Read quickly and carefully. Practice reading passages while underlining, circling and boxing for important facts.
· Go to the library and check out an ACT practice book. They have many different types to pick from in circulation.
· Write in your Testing booklet, finding trends in the data
· Do not worry about complicated and scientific terms. The test writers use these to throw you off and their understanding is not necessary for answering the questions.
ACT Science Test Format
· You will get 35 minutes to answer 40 multiple choice questions.
· There 7 passages, each with 5 – 7 questions
· There are 3 types of passages. Typically:
o Data Representation – 3 passages with 5 questions each
o Research summaries – 3 passages with 6 questions each
o Conflicting Viewpoints – 1 passage with 7 questions
· Every passage has easy, medium and hard questions within.
