WKCE for 8th Grade Only and Science Assessment 6-8

Good Afternoon!

State testing through the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) is different this school year.  Traditionally, this assessment was used state-wide to measure student achievement in grades 3-8 and 10 in Reading and Mathematics.  In addition, students in grades 4, 8, and 10 were also assessed in Science, Social Studies and Writing.  Starting this school year, the WKCE will only be given to all 4, 8, and 10th graders in Science and Social Studies.  The WKCE for Reading/Writing and Mathematics will be replaced by the Smarter Balanced Assessment that will be given to grades 3-8 in the Spring of the year.

With this being said, all 8th grade students will be taking the WKCE in their Science classes on 10/28/14 and in Social Studies classes on 10/29/14.  To ensure students perform optimally on these assessments, please make sure to have them get adequate rest next week and to eat a good breakfast on those mornings.

This week, students in grades 6-8 also took the Aspire Periodic Science assessment.  Teachers will be looking at these results to plan instruction and intervention during the school year.  This same assessment will be given in the winter and spring so progress and growth toward specific science categories can be monitored.  This assessment measures student knowledge in the areas of evaluation of models, inferences, and experimental results, interpretation of data, and scientific investigation.

Important Dates to Remember and General Reminders

  • Drop-Off and Pick-Up-Just a friendly reminder that students should be dropped off and picked up from the road in front of school.  Please do not pull into the semi-circle drive until after buses are done dropping off and picking up students at the beginning and end of the school day.  Your cooperation in making these times as safe and efficient as possible for all involved is greatly appreciated!
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences-OMS Parent/Teacher conferences will be on November 11th and November 18th this Fall.  Forms regarding conference requests should have come home.  If you haven’t done so already, please return them at your earliest convenience so we can continue planning for these two important nights.
  • Infinite Campus Parent Portal Information Session-Have you logged into the parent portal of Infinite Campus yet so you can get important information regarding your child(ren) and their education including grades, attendance, and other communication?  If you haven’t or have tried, but have had troubles, this session is for you!  If you have logged into the portal, but want more information or have questions about navigating the portal, this session is also for you!  Sessions will be held in the OHS Conference Room at 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm, or 6:30 pm on November 11th.  This is the first night of parent/teacher conferences for OMS.
  • Hansen Fundraiser Pick-Up-A special thank you to the students and families that participated in the Hansen Fundraiser this school year.  If your child participated, orders should be picked up between 3-5 pm on November 11th.
Have a great weekend!
