It seems like just yesterday that we were welcoming students back to OMS to kick off the beginning of the 15-16 school year. Now, in the blink of an eye, we are already having parent teacher conferences and printing report cards for the end of the first quarter. With a quarter of the school year in the books, there are a few announcements I’d like to make:
- Parent teacher conferences are tonight (11/10/15) and next week Tuesday (11/17/15) from 3-7 pm. I am looking forward to having parents in the building and working together with you to ensure that we are on the same page and are doing everything we can to ensure your child’s success in school.
Along with parent teacher conferences, tonight (11/10/15) is pick up for the Hansen fundraiser. If your child participated in the fundraiser, please pick up items from the OMS cafeteria anytime between 3 and 5 tonight. If you are unable to make it during this time, please make arrangements for someone else to pick up your items.
- As we become better at assessing and monitoring student progress on specific standards that students are learning in the class room, traditional grading practices fall short. It is our goal at OMS to have report cards that serve as a tool for communicating student learning to parents. When you combine student progress on a variety of standards and have to report out one letter grade, it makes it difficult as parents to know exactly what our children are excelling in and what areas they need to continue to focus on and work on. For this reason, I am looking to form a committee that looks deeper into the issue of grading and report cards so we can improve in this area and come closer to our goal of better communicating your child’s learning with you. Therefore, if you are a parent that may be interested in being on this committee, please contact me directly at (920) 564-2383.
- Report cards should be coming home with your child later this week. Please review your child’s report card and return the envelope, with your signature, to school with your child so we can recycle the envelopes and use them again. If you have any questions or concerns related to the report card, I encourage you to contact your child’s teachers directly. Again, a grade can be misleading and not tell you much related to what your child knows and is able to do. We’d be happy to meet and discuss your child’s learning further if you have continued questions after attending parent teacher conferences or if you were not able to attend conferences.
- The Oostburg Community Education Foundation (OCEF) fundraiser with Chili’s ends November 30th. If your family has a meal at Chili’s, please let them know “you are with the OCEF fundraiser” or show them your OCEF card. If you do so, Chili’s makes a donation to OCEF which will ultimately support our schools.
Again, I hope that this time of year allows us the opportunity to communicate and work with one another in the best interest of your child.
