Good morning, Parents.
I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful fall weekend. I think many of us fear these may be our last days in the 60’s for some time so we wanted to enjoy them to the fullest.
In this morning’s email/blog, I would just like to provide you some timely information.
We have completed the fall Aspire testing for freshmen and it went very well. We chose to test in classes (the science portion of the test was given in our Biology class, etc.), not only because it would not disrupt the rest of the school schedule, but also because we want our teachers to be as connected to the process as possible. Aspire and ACT results are important to us because our school goals are related to student growth from year to year on the Aspire test and building toward the ACT.
We will be taking a similar approach with the required State WKCE testing in Science and Social Studies. Our sophomores will be taking the Science test in their Chemistry class on October 28th and 29th, and in their Social Studies class on October 30th and 31st.
While we think that Aspire and ACT results should be something students see as rather important to them personally, and we would hope that perspective would result in students really working hard on the tests to do their best. We have clearly seen over the years this is not the case with the WKCE test, so we have provided students incentives to perform well on this test. If the sophomores score advanced or proficient on both tests, or improve upon their 8th grade results, we allow them to opt out of an end of the year exam. In the last five years or so, this incentive has worked well in that students have invested more energy and effort in the WKCE testing process, and the results have reflected this approach.
