Homecoming Traditions/Court

Good morning, Parents.

I think partially because of the minor changes that were made to traditions at Prom, and because many of us have been talking about changes to how the Homecoming court is selected for years, some parents have talked to me about changes that would make homecoming court more inclusive as well. Over the years, a number of things have been done by the student council to make homecoming week about more than just football. They have taken steps to include other fall sports as well as the dance team. Homecoming also features the Band in a number of ways, and includes all sorts of school wide events and competitions that students seem to really enjoy. Homecoming has become a positive school wide celebration, not just a week focused on a single sport.

I have asked our new student council advisers—Rachel Navis and Lisa Immel (who will begin as advisers next year)—to continue to shape our homecoming week to be as inclusive of all of our student body as possible, including how the homecoming court is selected. I also feel it is important that both the boys and girls get selected in a similar manner. We know from experience that changing traditions can be challenging at times, but one of the major purposes of this message is to open a bit of a discussion on this topic and seek ideas on how to do it best. We would be happy to hear from parents and students regarding ideas for how to shape our future homecoming traditions, but we also want to give the student council room to make decisions about their events. If parents would like to share ideas about how to make our homecoming traditions better, we would like to hear from you.

Have a great week.

Scott
