Detention changes.

Good morning, Parents.

Last week, we decided as a faculty to revise our detention process to include both lunches rather than just a single lunch period. Our basic motivation in making this change was to strengthen the consequence for getting detention because we felt the single lunch period loss of social time simply wasn’t a strong enough sanction. While we have been pleased with the results of moving our detention time to the lunch period from after school, we have felt that the consequence is a bit weak given the fact that detention is our primary disciplinary tool.

Any student who gets detention going forward will be assigned to the detention room for both lunch periods. If any of these students are also assigned to intervention with a teacher, the intervention takes precedence and the student reports to intervention for learning support, and then reports to detention to have lunch in a non-social setting. If a student assigned to detention does not have intervention, they are assigned to the detention room from 10:25-11:30 for a non-social lunch period and study time.

I am also pleased to share that Mr. DeRoos is working to set up Infinite Campus to record detentions so that this information is available to parents. It is our hope that we will be able to set up this system in Infinite Campus today, train our teachers how to use it at our faculty meeting tomorrow, and make detention information available to parents via Infinite Campus in the very near future.

Have a great week,
Scott
