Not many weeks better than this one at OSD….. There are quite a few special times throughout our school year but few compare to the opportunity we have to honor our Veterans. Our efforts in this regard actually began Saturday as our high school marching band, under the direction of Rebekah Mueller (@Banddutchess), led our students in the 53rd annual Veterans Day Parade through downtown Milwaukee. Oostburg has been participating in this parade for almost two decades and is one of only 2 bands that have participated this regularly. The parade website at http://www.honorourmilitary.us/veterans-day-parade/ includes several photos of our @oostburgschools band – the only band highlighted on the site!
Our efforts to say thank you continue this morning with our annual Veterans Breakfast in the MS cafeteria followed by our Veterans Day prorgram tonight (Monday, Nov. 7) in the HS gym. Our efforts to say thank you conclude with one of my absolute favorites – the annual OES Veterans program and lunch at OES on Friday, Nov. 11. This program includes emotional speeches from our youngest students along with hand made cards given to each Veteran who joins us. Last year we had over 70 local Veterans attend.
We live in a time when people may be quick to criticize our country and this election week certainly brings a strong negative focus. Veterans Day allows us to focus on the positives – the tremendous sacrifice made by our service men and women so that we have the freedom to vote and live in a country that is truly blessed! I hope each of you can join us – either at OHS for tonight’s program or Friday morning at OES. On behalf of our students and staff, THANK YOU Veterans!
Enjoy this day,
