School / Business Partnerships at OSD

What makes Oostburg unique? That is a question I am asked relatively often. We believe the success of our schools is a large part of the answer to that question, and we know that success is dependent on strong family support and high community engagement. Our community engagement is positively influenced by the large number of small businesses driving our local economy and stepping up to support our schools, churches and various civic organizations. Oostburg truly is a great place to receive an education, a great place to work, and a great place to raise a family. As a District we want to magnify these community positives by expanding our partnerships with local business beyond the typical requests for financial support that can define school/business partnerships in many communities.

Specifically, we have invited and hosted local business leaders in our technology rich Innovation rooms. Our direction in many curricular areas is directly shaped by advisory committees comprised of local business leaders. Our involvement in the Youth Apprenticeship Program continues to set the bar in our county, and our work in academic career planning is well ahead of the curve.

As we focus here on business partnerships, I would like to specifically recognize high school technology education teacher, Mr. Matt Poppe for his work in growing school/business collaboration. Matt will be receiving the “Excellence in Manufacturing / K-12 Partnership Award” at an upcoming celebration sponsored by the New Manufacturing Alliance  (http://newmfgalliance.org/). On October 19th Matt will be recognized along with three other educators from this region of the State at an event being held at the KI Center in Green Bay. Matt was nominated for this award based on his work to expand opportunities for our students as they prepare for careers with local businesses. Matt’s leadership in growing our Youth Apprenticeship program is complimented by his coordination of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Advisory Committee. Congratulations Matt on this recognition from our business community.
